Trader Joe’s Firming Body Butter: A Dupe for Sol De Janeiro?

Today I’m reviewing the Trader Joe’s Firming Body Butter with Vitamin C and Glycolic Acid. I found it at my Trader joe’s for the first time earlier this summer. Of course I added it to my cart instantly! I couldn’t wait to try it out and immediately wondered if it was anything like the Sold De Janeiro Bum Bum Cream.

In this post, I’ll dive in and see what this firming body butter is all about. I’ll also tell you my thoughts on if it’s a dupe for the Sol De Janeiro Bum Bum Cream!

Trader joes Firming body butter

The Trader Joe’s Firming Body Butter with Vitamin C and Glycolic Acid is a new Trader Joe’s product that was released earlier this year. It started flying off the shelves and was quickly sold out. I finally found it after months of searching and couldn’t wait to slather myself in firming cream goodness. It’s being touted as a dupe for the Sol De Janeiro Bum Bum Cream because of the claimed firming effects and the rich creamy texture.

I’m going to do a deep dive on this product here in this post. I’ll let you know if I like it, if it worked for me, and if it truly is a good dupe! I’ll go over everything so you can make a decision for yourself if it’s something you want to buy.

Trader Joe’s Firming Body Butter with Vitamin C and Glycolic Acid

This body butter sells at most Trader Joe’s stores. It’s $6.99 for 8 ounces of product. Unfortunately, it’s not sold online unless you grab it from ebay, poshmark or other second hand selling platform. My Trader Joe’s typically has a lot of them in stock, but your market may vary.

It seems as though everyone wants a good dupe for the Sol De Janeiro Bum Bum cream, but is this one the ticket to a cheaper alternative? Lets find out!

The Scent

It say’s on the tube of this Firming Cream that it has a bright clementine scent. It’s for sure strong, and I could smell it the second I ripped off the seal. The smell reminds me of the Satsuma body butter from the Body Shop. It’s strong, citrusy, and very invigorating. It’s nothing like the scent of the Sol DE Janeiro Bum Bum Cream which is more of a rich caramel and pistachio scent. Personally, I prefer the smell of the Firming Body Butter, but that’s totally personal preference.

Basically, this particular body butter is a far cry from being the same scent experience as the Bum Bum cream. However, the scent lasts for a long time just like the Sol De Janeiro does. So if you want lingering scent and like a bright and cheery smell, this could be a good alternative.

The Packaging

This is probably the biggest difference between the two products. The Trader Joes Firming Body Butter is in an orange and yellow ombre colored tube. It has a flip top that you squeeze the product out of. I prefer this packaging over the Bum Bum cream that comes in an orange tub that you twist a lid off of and use your fingers to get the product out. I much prefer the packaging of the Firming Body Butter. To me the tube is much more sanitary and clean. I also don’t like to twist lids back on once I’ve used a cream and my hands are now slick.

The Cost

Of coarse this is going to be a big difference. Like any good dupe product the cost is going to be much, much less of a cost. At just over $7 per 8 ounces for the Trader Joe’s body butter you are getting a screaming deal compared to the $48 price tag for the same 8 ounce size of the Bum Bum cream!

The Consistency

This is where the Firming Body Butter starts looking like a good dupe. They both have a rich and velvety consistency. Both if the creams go on the skin in a very rich, creamy and hydrating way. They soak in fairly quickly leaving behind smooth and firmer skin. In this aspect these two products are an exact dupe.

The Results

This is where I personally wanted to see if this was a good alternative to the firming effects of the Bum Bum Cream. After all, that’s the whole reason why I buy these creams! I know that nothing is going to be a miracle worker, but my ageing skin needs help. Am I right?

In my opinion the Trader Joes Firming Body Butter works BETTER than the Sol De Janeiro at firming and tightening the skin. I can for sure tell a big difference when I use this product. When I use the Bum Bum cream, I feel like the experience lies in the scent and the hype over the product. But it doesn’t actually do a great job of firming the skin like it says.

Is This Firming Body Butter a Dupe for the Sol De Janeiro?

Overall, if you can’t tell, I like the Trader Joes Firming Body Butter much better than the Sol De Janeiro Bum Bum cream. Do I think that the TJ’s Firming Cream is a dupe? No. Basically everything about the two products are different, other than the texture and consistency. So if you’re looking for a body cream that tightens and firms with a rich consistency and a cheery citrus scent, then I highly recommend the Firming Body Butter. If you’re looking for a dupe of the Bum Bum cream, this one doesn’t do the trick. They smell nothing alike and they don’t perform the same at all.
