The newest member of the Trader Joe’s Cosmetic family is a sweet Vanilla Lip Mask. This mask comes in a pale yellow jar with 20g (0.7 oz) of product and it retails for $5.99.

Trader Joe’s Vanilla Lip Mask vs Laneige Vanilla Lip Mask

I’m a huge fan of Laneige Lip masks! The glossy thick texture stays on my lips all night long to reveal hydrated and plump lips in the morning. There are a multitude of flavors of Laneige lip mask and I happen to own most of them. Vanilla being one of my absolute favorites. I plowed through an entire jar last year and just bought myself a replacement.

So when I saw this new Vanilla lip mask at Trader Joe’s, I knew I had to have it. For only $6, it was a no-brainer to me since Laneige Lip masks retail for around $24 for the same amount of product. Here is how they compare:

Trader Joe’s Lip Mask on the Left, Laneige Lip Mask on the Right

Texture: The texture of the Trader Joe’s lip mask is very different than the Laneige. Trader Joe’s is a lot thinner of a consistency and feels more waxy. It is hydrating and smooth when you first put it on and definitely feels good on my dry winter lips though. However, I was hoping it was a bit more like the Laneige with a thick barrier.

Scent: Both of these products smell great. They don’t smell exactly the same though. Laneige has a sweeter vanilla scent, whereas Trader Joe’s is a bit more earthy. I love both of them and don’t prefer one over the other when it comes to the scent.

Performance: Since the texture of these two products is fairly different, I wasn’t expecting them to perform the same either. The reason why I love the Laneige lip masks so much is because they have a thick and buildable consistency that can stay on your lips for most, or all, of the night. The consistency of the Trader Joe’s Lip Mask in my opinion is very different. It didn’t have near the staying power of the Laneige making my lips wanting more when I woke up.

Overall Thoughts on the Trader Joe’s Vanilla Lip Mask

It didn’t hold up to my tried and true ride-or-die Laneige lip masks. I truly haven’t found an affordable replacement (this brand comes close, but is still expensive).

I truly am sad that this didn’t hold a candle to what I was comparing it to. However, for $5.99 I think it’s a good lip balm for day use. I will still be using it that way, I just don’t see myself using it at night time again. You get a lot of product in this jar and it will last you a while. So I would still buy it again but it isn’t a dupe for the Laneige sleeping lip masks.
