5 Hormones That Control Your Metabolism

This post is all about the Hormones That Control Your Metabolism, and how to optimize them for better health and a slimmer figure.

5 Hormones That Control Your Metabolism

As Women, it’s hard to know exactly what is going on in our bodies. We experience mood swings and different levels of hormones with our cycle almost daily. It’s hard to keep up, and as we age our weight can creep up even with a consistent workout regime. I’ve outlined the 5 Hormones That Control Your Metabolism and ideas on how to optimize them.

With good practices and consistency, you’ll start to see the scale slowly decrease when these hormones are optimized. It definitely doesn’t happen overnight. Some of these hormones can take up to 6 months to get regulated, so be patient with yourself.

Hormones that control your metabolism

Estrogen

This hormone tends to live its best life in our 20’s and early 30’s, but estrogen dominance is a huge problem in women over 35. If you have too much estrogen, you’ll experience low libido, tender breasts, anxiety, mood swings, and depression to name a few. But weight gain and fatigue are probably the most pesky symptoms to look out for.

To control estrogen levels, it’s important to eat a clean diet. Adding in raw, uncooked carrots is a great idea since carrots contain a unique fiber that binds to extra estrogen and eliminates it. You should also significantly decrease, or stop alcohol consumption. And try to avoid endocrine disrupters like; fluoride, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, pesticides, synthetic vitamins, etc.

Insulin

This hormone is probably the one that is the hardest to figure out. Unless you are diabetic, or check your blood sugar levels constantly, it’s hard to know exactly what your insulin levels are doing. They fluctuate hourly depending on what foods you’re consuming and the more sugary or starchy they are the more insulin will spike and plummet. The higher and lower these spikes are the more body fat will be stored and energy levels tanked.

To control insulin, we need to eat less sugar and prioritize movement. Going for a 15-minute walk after a meal is a great way to promote digestion and lower insulin. Supplementing with cinnamon and apple cider vinegar is also known to help with insulin levels.

Cortisol

This sneaky, silent sabotager will render whatever you do in the gym or the kitchen useless. If you have too much cortisol, you will experience irritability and be exhausted all day without being able to sleep at night. You’ll also have excess weight around your abdomen that feels impossible to lose.

I have a whole blog post on how to control cortisol levels. The best practices to start implementing to control cortisol levels will be taking adaptogens and starting a stress management protocol.

Ghrelin

Controls our hunger dial. When it’s out of whack it makes us crave crazy amounts of sugar. The higher your levels of ghrelin, the hungrier you get. The lower your levels, the more full you feel and the easier it is to eat fewer calories. Therefore, if you want to lose weight, lowering your ghrelin levels can be beneficial.

To naturally lower ghrelin levels you need to be eating a healthy, fiber-rich diet, consuming adequate protein, exercising, getting enough sleep, and minimizing stress.

T3

This is one of the more interesting hormones. The thyroid makes T4, which gets transported to the liver, where the liver then converts T4 into T3. For people who have a healthy liver, this makes things really easy. However, it’s not that simple. A lot of people have low levels of T3 due to overworked and under-functioning livers. And most doctors won’t test for T3, so knowing your levels is extremely difficult.

T3 plays an important role in the body’s control of metabolism. Studies have shown that higher levels of T3 show improved mood, and better energy and concentration. Some studies also showed reductions in cholesterol and body weight.

The best way to naturally improve T3 levels is to improve your liver function. This includes taking less unneeded medications (instead of taking ibuprofen for a headache, try minerals like magnesium and salt and a bath instead). You can also try a caster oil pack to help detox the liver. And, like all of these hormones, try eating a whole-food diet that’s rich in fiber.

  1. Thank you for sharing this important info! My hormones have gotten out of whack before between thyroid issues and estrogen issues and it’s so important to understand their role in our bodies.

  2. Very informative! I’ve never heard of some of these. I definitely need to watch out because I tend to have many of the symptons you mentioned.
