5 Morning Habits That Can Harm Your Hormones
This post contains 5 Morning Habits That Can Harm Your Hormones and Easy Fixes.
Your Morning Routine is Essential for Hormone Bliss
You only get one chance per day to make your morning a good one. The first few hours after you wake up are essential in setting the tone for the whole day.
How you wake up and move throughout the first few hours affects your energy, mood, productivity, and hormone activation.
Harmful Morning Habits
Did you know that the way you wake up and what you consume can directly affect what hormones are activated throughout the entire day? Here are the habits you could be doing that are wrecking your hormones.
1. You Grab Your Phone Instantly After you Open Your Eyes In the Morning
The first thing you do when you wake up is grab that phone and make sure that no one messaged you. Or you need to know what’s going on on Instagram or (insert your app of choice). If this describes you, you are disrupting the delicate balance of your circadian rhythm. This can mess up the rest of your day and even cause you to not sleep well the following night.
This habit also puts you into the energy of consumption and can give you a way bigger dopamine hit than what you want first thing in the morning.
You also may have the habit of checking work emails or working right away. This doesn’t allow you to wake up on your schedule and ease into the day with boundaries set.
Try sleeping with your phone in a different room entirely. When you wake up, open the blinds and do a few stretches to warm your body and get ready for the day with gentle movement. Once you have had some natural light on your face, then you can go check your phone.
2. You Drink Black Coffee on an Empty Stomach
If you are generally stressed out, this could be one of the worst morning habits on this list. Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can cause hormone imbalances and blood sugar issues. There is research showing that coffee on an empty stomach can cause a cortisol spike and impact insulin. It also causes gut issues and can lead to gut dysfunction and digestive issues.
If you love your morning coffee, try drinking it with a protein-rich breakfast.
3. You Eat the Wrong Food For Breakfast
The worst thing that modern society has inflicted is telling us that cold cereal, muffins, bagels, and pastries are good breakfast options. These high-carb options are spiking your insulin levels first thing causing insulin resistance, energy slumps, brain fog, and cravings throughout the rest of the day.
Try having a high-protein breakfast with 20-30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up for optimal hormone health. This will set your day up for hormonal success.
4. You Wake Up and are Instantly “Rushed”
Hitting the snooze button 5 times and oversleeping because you didn’t get to bed early enough the night before and now your day is off to a chaotic start? This is going to cause a huge cortisol spike and disrupt your cortisol levels throughout the rest of the day.
Give yourself plenty of time to ease into the day. This means that you need to get to bed early and make sure you give yourself plenty of time to fall asleep and get at least 8 hours of snooze time. If you need some tips on how to get a better sleep, check out this blog post.
5. You aren’t Getting Any Morning Sun
Getting a daily dose of bright light in the morning helps to kickstart your body’s sleep-wake cycle and keep your circadian rhythm in balance. Studies have shown that regular morning sunlight exposure can help us fall asleep more quickly at night and wake up feeling more refreshed.
Exposure to full-spectrum sunlight in the morning causes our bodies to produce serotonin, which not only helps later on with nighttime sleep but improves mood throughout the day.
Ivy Cheung, PhD candidate in neuroscience at Northwestern says, “Light is the most important synchronizing agent for the brain on body. Proper synchronization of internal biological rhythms with the earth’s daily rotation has been shown to be essential for health.”
Going back to number 1 on this list. Try to open your blinds first thing in the morning to get some natural light on your face right when you wake up.
